Writing today isn’t just putting pen to paper. Therefore, in the Writing and Rhetoric Program at FIU, we help people excel in a variety of communication contexts, including in academic, professional, and community settings. Our faculty’s expertise spans digital content design, project management, technical and professional writing, community and grant writing, and rhetorical theories of language and communication. In our innovative courses, our faculty frequently foster collaboration on real-world projects with local and international partners. Throughout our work, we tie our efforts back to the dynamic multicultural environment of Miami by emphasizing language diversity and multilingualism, preparing participants to write effectively for the 21st century.

  • Degrees and Courses

We serve over 4,000 students each semester, with face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses. We offer:

    • The Writing and Rhetoric track in the Bachelor of Arts in English. In this track, you can learn to write for 21st century audiences across a variety of media. We offer the degree in-person in Miami or fully online. Our courses cover a range of topics and practices, such as business writing, writing about the environment, community action, and digital design.
    • The Certificate in Professional and Public Writing. This certificate can help you show your expertise in writing alongside your own major. Any FIU Undergraduate can enroll.
    • The Writing and Rhetoric track in the Master of Arts in English. Through this track, you’ll gain advanced preparation for academic and professional careers and will be ready to work as a university writing instructor.  Our graduate courses cover a range of topics, including multilingual writing, qualitative research methods, grant writing, and composition pedagogy.
    • A strong foundation for all college students in our first-year writing courses, including support for multilingual student writers.
  • Community Engagement

The Writing and Rhetoric Program offers diverse community engagement opportunities where you will experience the real-world impact of your work.

Our writing courses will give you the opportunity to collaborate with civic and arts organizations, schools, libraries, and other FIU departments on real projects. For example, our students have participated in anonymous letter exchanges with incarcerated students through a partnership with Exchange for Change. They have developed storytelling projects, multimodal writing, and grant proposals with Miami Waterkeeper. And they have worked with students from universities across the world in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) projects.

Learn about other partnerships and projects on our Community Writing Website.
