Field Experiences

Please read the information below to learn about the requirements and procedures for securing field placements in Miami-Dade and Broward County Schools.

To obtain a placement, bring a valid security clearance card (Miami-Dade County) or badge (Broward County) and a printed copy of your current course schedule to the Office of Clinical Experiences (ZEB 130), Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.  All placements must be arranged through the Office of Clinical Experiences.

Please be aware of the following policies. All students must:

  • Be fingerprinted and cleared through the appropriate school district before beginning field experience hours
  • Contact the administrator at the assigned school to schedule a meeting
  • Attend all school visits as scheduled with your Master Teacher
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and appropriate attire at all field sites
  • Maintain an ongoing record of your school visits, using the FIU Field Experience Attendance Log

Placement Procedures

  • Procedures for Field Experience Placements for Miami-Dade County Schools

    If you do not have a valid security clearance card from Miami-Dade County Public Schools:

    o    Obtain information sheet and Service Provider Input Document here, from our office, or via email: gonzalma@fiu.edu or cohenj@fiu.edu and complete the fingerprinting process.

    o    After being fingerprinted, wait one week and then call our office: 305-348-2082.

    o    If your clearance has been confirmed, come to ZEB 130 and receive your security clearance card. We will take your picture at that time.

    o    Bring a printed copy of your current course schedule to select a school site from the list of approved schools posted on the monitor in ZEB 130.

    o    At that time, we will provide:

              o    A placement memo for your assigned school, with the e-mail address of the contact person.

              o    A copy of the Field Experience Attendance Log for each course that requires field hours.

    After you schedule a meeting date and time at the assigned school, plan to arrive on time, dress professionally, and bring your security clearance card and a copy of the assignments from your course instructor/s. Once you schedule the days and times of your visits with your Master Teacher, be sure to arrive on time, and be prepared to complete the assignments provided by your course instructor/s. Remember that you represent FIU and the School of Education and Human Development! Be professional and respectful in every way. You are a guest at the school!

    If you do have a valid security clearance card from Miami-Dade County Public Schools:

Student Teaching

Online Application Process for All Initial Teacher Education Programs - Fall 2024

Online applications for Fall 2024 Student Teaching will be accepted from Tuesday, February 6 through Friday, Friday, March 15, 2024.

Student teaching applicants must pass all parts of the GK in order to apply. 

Passing scores for the Professional Education and Subject Area Exams must be submitted by August 2nd, 2024.
