• Department Diversity Statement

  The Department of Earth and Environment is dedicated to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all of our faculty, staff and students, and those within the larger community studying the Earth and environment. We encourage the exchange of scientific ideas, data, endeavors and international collaborations. The mission and vision of the department is to welcome and support our regional, national and international communities and their diverse members. The department does not discriminate in its activities and services to our members or those within the broader community based on but not limited to race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, socioeconomic status, and parental/caregiver status. The department aims to ensure that all activities related to and sponsored by it are conducted professionally, with all participants treated with respect and dignity.

  The department’s privilege and duty are to serve our global community and to broaden participation in the geosciences and environmental studies. We have and will continue to increase accessibility, equity, and inclusion for our community members through hiring, admissions and awards. Our long-term goal is to determine how we can continue to best support our faculty, staff and students, and increase access to and diversity within the geosciences and environmental studies. Together, we encourage conversations about accessibility, inclusion, diversity and equity, and we invite input on the best ways to further our mission and vision.

  The Department of Earth and Environment recognizes that we work on lands that have been cared for by innumerable generations of original peoples of the past including the Tequesta and Calusa Indigenous peoples, whose memory we honor. The lands of South Florida are currently cared for by the Indigenous sovereignties known as the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and the Sovereign Miccosukee Seminole Nation. As global researchers, we endeavor to engage the Indigenous peoples and consider their knowledge, interests and concerns in our research.
