It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Professor John Tenenholtz on September 02, 2023.
Professor Tenenholtz had a very rich career. He started as a tax attorney in Miami and after many decades of practicing law, he decided to pursue his passion of studying Mathematical sciences and doing research. After earning his master’s degree in Statistics in 2017, Professor Tenenholtz joined the department of mathematics and statistics as a visiting professor of statistics in 2018.
Professor Tenenholtz was truly dedicated to his students and their academic success. He worked hard on all his classes and was continuously developing new pedagogical skills. He would often share his own analysis of real-life data with students to illustrate the applications of statistics. John was equally dedicated to the department. He went above and beyond the call of duty to serve the department, participating actively in committee work, attending departmental meetings and seminars. Despite teaching four classes a semester, John found time for research. He was passionate about sea level rise having done his thesis on the topic but in addition, he did research on other topical subjects for example, analysis of covid and election data. In short, John was an exceptional teacher, researcher, and a great colleague. Everyone in the department loved and respected him and he will be deeply missed.
John is survived by his parents Phyllis and Alan, sister Sherri and sister-in-law Carol, brother Rick and brother-in-law Harold, nephews Brad and Mark and nieces Samantha and Blair. To honor John’s love for teaching, his family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the John Tenenholtz memorial fund to support education in Mathematics and Statistics.
