Revenge porn, harrassment and the scourge of sexual violence in a digital world

Sexual violence is a worldwide health problem that has begun to escalate online. Technology-facilitated sexual violence ranges from online sexual and gender-based harassment, to cyberstalking, revenge porn and even sextortion. Dr. Asia Eaton discusses the different forms of technology-facilitated sexual violence and ways to support victim-survivors.

Historically, however, women have had less access to leadership positions than men, and Dr. Asia Eaton believes this continues to be an important aspect of life in organizations and for women in particular. STEMming the Tide: Calculating Obstacles, Engineering Equity in the Workforce

The last three decades have witnessed an increase in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) outreach programs and interventions in the U.S., yet gender and ethnic racial inequities persist. Dr. Asia Eaton discusses the challenges still facing STEM professionals and students from marginalized backgrounds in the STEM workforce, including intersecting forms of prejudice and discrimination as well as other social and structural barriers.

Modern Intimacy and the Truth about Sexting

Who is sexting, what’s being sent, what’s going wrong, and what does it mean for our own relationships? Dr. Asia Eaton confronts misguided narratives and reveals the truth about sexting using the latest research from social science. She will discuss the psychology of sexting in a sex-positive way, supporting diverse forms of consensual sexual expression and liberation from oppressive sexual norms and practices.

We will review motivations for sexting, gender and power dynamics in sexting relationships, potential benefits of sexting, the nature and harms of sexting-related crimes, and advice about sex-positive sexting practices. We will also describe specific research findings and provide summaries of existing evidence, as well as give evidence-based advice for sexters, educators, service providers, and victims

About Dr. Asia A. Eaton 

Dr. Asia Eaton is a feminist social psychologist and Professor of Psychology at Florida International University (FIU) where she serves as Director of the Applied Social and Cultural Psychology Ph.D. Program. Her research explores how gender intersects with identities such as race, sexual orientation, and class to affect individuals access to and experience with power. For example, she has published work on discrimination in academic STEM contexts and the workplace, as well as power dynamics in intimate partner relationships.

In her quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods work, she engages social and cultural psychological theories and methods to address real-world social problems in collaboration with local, state and national organizations and institutions. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in Divisions 9 and 35. Asia received a Ph.D. and M.A. in Psychology, with a minor in Statistics, from the University of Chicago. She completed her undergraduate work at Carnegie Mellon University, receiving a B.S. in Psychology and a B.A. in Philosophy. She also recently earned a M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from FIU.

When she's not advancing dialogues on gender-related issues, Dr. Eaton also strength trains and enjoys baking. She is the doting single mother of two boys.

Dr. Asia Eaton has translated her years of psychology research into innovative training experiences for the workplace. She has given lectures and led workshops on women’s leadership, negotiation, identity management, and sexual harassment for organizations including Meta, Google, the United States Marine Corps, the Korean Ministry of Women and Family, and more.
