The Applied Social and Cultural Psychology (ASCP) Certificate Program is more than an academic credential—it’s a transformative training experience. Exclusively available to FIU Psychology doctoral students, the ASCP Certificate Program is intentionally designed to complement their broader Ph.D. program's training.
Grounded in the principles of public psychology, the ASCP Certificate Program equips students with frameworks and methods for engaging diverse populations and addressing urgent social issues applicable to their own academic program area. This certiificate will highlight your ability to collaborate with stakeholders—from policymakers and nonprofit leaders to activists and corporate decision-makers—and how to effectively communicate research findings across these audiences.
The ASCP Certificate's curriculum is both flexible and interdisciplinary, requiring students to complete six graduate-level courses tailored to their interests. These span areas such as cross-cultural psychology, community psychology, qualitative methods, and professional development, allowing students to develop both theoretical depth and applied skillsets. On a case by case basis, students can also have appropriate courses from their primary doctoral program approved to fulfill course requirements.
A novel feature of this certificate is its portfolio requirement, which ensures students have a tangible evidence of their training impact. This includes producing scholarly or reflective written work tied to a public psychology project, engaging in real-world dissemination (such as policy briefs, workshops, or op-eds), and crafting a positionality statement that reflects their role and perspective as researchers.
Ultimately, the ASCP Doctoral Certificate Program cultivates scholar-practitioners who can bridge science and society—individuals prepared not only to understand complex social systems, but to actively shape them through research, collaboration, and public engagement.
