Admissions

All application materials should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Admissions via the online Graduate Application. Use the graduate admission checklist to get started.

  • Deadlines

    Fall:
    Domestic Applicants - Apply by June 1st, 5 p.m. EST
    Foreign Applicants - Apply by March 31st, 5 p.m. EST

  • Requirements
    • GPA: 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate study is required for consideration.
    • GRE (Optional):Scores on the verbal, quantitative and writing sections of the General Record Examination (GRE) taken within the last 5 year are accepted. Please Note: The GRE is recommended, but not required, for applicants below a 3.5 GPA. A score within the 60th to 80th percentile is preferred.
    • Introduction Video: A brief introduction video describing the applicant's interest in the program and career goals is required. Click HERE for Instructions and HERE for the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Document.
    • Work Sample Video: A non-technical presentation on a current I/O related research article of your choice. For instructions and a list of approved journals for research articles, please click HERE.
    • Letters of Recommendation: Three (3) letters evaluating the applicant's potential for graduate work with at least 1 being from an academic source. (Please note that we can only consider recommendations from academic sources or professional references; recommendations from friends or family members will not be accepted).
      • Best Academic Sources:
        • Professors, Lecturers, or Adjunct Faculty – especially those who taught you in upper-level or relevant coursework
        • Academic Advisors
        • Teaching Assistants (TAs) – especially if they had significant interactions with you
        • Lab Coordinators – if they supervised your academic or research work
    • Resume/CV
    • Additional Requirements:
      • English Proficiency Exams
        1. Applicants from non-English speaking countries, including internationally educated American students, must demonstrate proficiency in English. 
        2. Applicants that attended undergraduate institutions that do not teach in English must also meet this requirement, even if the institution is located within the United States.  FIU only accepts official test scores or official documentation sent directly from the testing agency or organization (FIU institution code: 5206).
          1. TOEFL iBT/PBT: 80/550
          2. IELTS: 6.5
          3. Duolingo English Test

      • Foreign-educated Students:
        As of January 15th, 2023, an official course-by-course evaluation is required from a NACES member credential evaluation service for all international post-secondary (college or university) coursework when applicable. The evaluation must come directly from the evaluation service to FIU and be certified as an official document. FIU only accepts secure transcripts of post-secondary school records and these must be received via official channels of mail or authorized electronic transmission. All credentials and documents submitted to the Office of Admissions become the property of FIU and original documents to the applicant will not be provided.
