Condensed Matter Physics

We are engaged in theoretical and experimental investigations across a variety of topics using facilities at FIU and at research laboratories around the world.

  • Experimental

Spans from surface characterization, nanomaterials synthesis and characterization to functional device fabrication and measurements. Surface plasmon Resonance (SPR), Scanning probe microscopy (AFM, STM, SICM), Raman, XPS, SEM/TEM, novel ultrafast spectroscopy are some of the experimental techniques in use.

  • Theory

Involves investigations of materials in terms of structural electronic and magnetic properties including interesting systems such as transition metal compounds, surfaces and metal-semiconductor interfaces. The major tools we use consist of a variety of computational techniques that can solve many-electron systems efficiently using quantum mechanics.

Our goal is to explain material properties such as superconductivity, to understand the energetics of phase transformations and to explore new materials with potential applications.
