Speaker Presentation: Resilience in Teaching: Make Your Comebacks Exceed Your Setbacks

This presentation will focus on ways to help teachers become effective leaders that allow them to be assets in moving their organizations forward. Not fear the inevitable setbacks, but rather embrace their comebacks.

 What do we Read?  Making Equitable Choices in the Classroom
Presented by Ms. Ana Prado
Doctoral Student in Teaching and Learning:  Language, Literature, Literacy and Culture, Florida International University

Building on the theme of Social Justice in the classroom, Ana will discuss how selection of reading materials should be diverse, authentic, and engage students in thoughtful and critical discussions, regardless of grade level. What can and should future teachers consider when developing curricula and planning out classroom explorations of big ideas? Can and should we use multiple modes of text (video, online, images, sound, music) to create a more equitable classroom, where diverse approaches to texts and ideas help us broaden our perspectives?

 What's the Problem? Teaching Mathematics Through A Problem-Solving Approach
Presented by Ms. Elizabeth Forde
Ph.D. Candidate in Teaching and Learning:  STEM Education, Florida International University

Having students solve problems for themselves can foster conceptual understanding and promote a growth mindset. Teachers need to shift from the procedural approach in which they ‘show’ students how to solve problems using step-by-step procedures, to one which is centered on students’ own mathematical thinking. Throughout this session, participants will be given an insight into teaching mathematics through problem solving. They will engage in an approach to assist them, as future teachers, to facilitate understanding of mathematical concepts by exploring problem situations.

This presentation will explore strategies and pedagogical approaches that make teaching and learning engaging, interactive, and relevant.  Participants will walk away with unconventional strategies that engage students of ALL abilities in exciting educational experiences including game-based learning, citizen science projects, document-based questioning, student curated content, project-based learning involving real world experiences, computer science integration and more.

This will make your time in the classroom a success for you and your students. In this session, Nerissa Manela will share tips for success that she has learned from her experiences in her early career.
