Speaker Presentation: Elevating Teaching

Participants will explore the growth mindset as an essential disposition for learning. Mr. Diez will discuss how mistakes should be welcome in the classroom and how students should be comfortable making them in order to reach their goals. Fundamental ideas and suggestions that will help future and new teachers build the foundation of a great teaching career will be addressed.

 

Workshop: Becoming ‘STEMified’: Creating awareness of STEM & STEM Education

Research has shown that many teachers ‘feel less knowledgeable about STEM content and less comfortable teaching STEM than other subjects. (Adam et al., 2014)

Throughout this session, participants will be given an insight into the meaning and significance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and STEM education. They will also have the opportunity to engage in hands-on inquiry and open-ended exploration activities that would create an awareness of the possibilities of teaching STEM subjects effectively using an integrated approach.  Participants will be exposed to how STEM learning can address real social, economic and environmental issues as well as encourage solutions.

FIUteach is a secondary STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) teacher preparation initiative that is helping to produce qualified math and science teachers who will inspire and challenge students to become the math and science leaders of tomorrow. This session will showcase innovative teaching models and best practices in STEM teaching. Students will participate in an inquiry-based STEM activity.
