Mara Zapata’s work has focused on curriculum and instruction - specifically, science teaching and learning and the professional development of teachers through reflective practice and their engagement with inquiry-based methodology. Her research has been framed by an analysis of teacher practice through the filters of gender and socio-cultural identity, seeking to understand the ways gender identity influences teacher practice, teacher conceptions of knowledge, the knowing subject and use of inquiry-based methodology in the k-12 classroom. At the university level she has taught Methods of Teaching Science at both the undergraduate and graduate level and has served as co-principal investigator of the NSF-funded REALM - Really Exploring and Learning Meteorology program, involving middle school science teachers and students.
