Research Areas

Bacterial natural products have fundamentally improved human lifespan and quality by virtue of their direct use as medicines, particularly antibiotics. Their complex chemical structures have inspired generations of the world’s top organic chemists to innovate at the cutting edge of synthetic methodology. Today, we are at the precipice of another revolution given the maturity of knowledge surrounding natural product biosynthesis, genetics, and enzymology. We combine techniques and knowledge across all these areas to isolate natural products with improved and/or novel biological functions relative to known compounds and utilize natural product-related enzymes as biocatalysts to enable streamlined synthetic routes.
