He has held academic appointments at the University of British Columbia and the University of Western Ontario in Canada, as well as at Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. Dr. Kibria's research spans a broad range of areas in statistics, including Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, Computational Statistics, Environmental Statistics, Distribution Theory, Machine Learning, Model Fitting and Validation, Pre-test and Shrinkage Estimation, Ridge Regression, Statistical Inference, and Simulation Studies. Since 1993, he has published or had accepted for publication more than 325 full-length research articles in reputable statistical journals, in addition to 30 proceedings papers, and has co-authored two books. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Kibria has made significant contributions to graduate and undergraduate education and research mentorship. At FIU and Jönköping University (Sweden), he has served as major or co-major professor for six Ph.D. students. He has also served as the major professor for 24 master's students and 32 undergraduate students at FIU. He has also served on more than 100 Ph.D., M.Phil., and M.Sc. thesis committees at FIU and at institutions in Australia, Canada, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sweden.

Dr. Kibria has received numerous awards and honors for his research, scholarship, and service. These include FIU Top Scholar Awards (2016 and 2024), FIU Faculty Awards for Excellence in Research & Creative Activities (2021 and 2026), College of Arts, Sciences and Education Research Awards (2016, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025), the College of Arts, Sciences and Education Community Engagement Award (2021), Certificates of Excellence in Reviewing (2018 and 2022), Canadian Commonwealth Scholarships at the University of Western Ontario and Carleton University, the UWO Graduate Research Fellowship, and several prestigious awards and scholarships from Jahangirnagar University, including the Chancellor's Award, Government Talent Pool Scholarship, and Asadul Kabir Gold Medal.

Dr. Kibria has also made substantial contributions to the statistical research community through editorial and professional service. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Probability and Statistical Science for approximately five years and has served as Guest Editor for special issues of the Journal of Statistical Research and STATS. He currently serves on the editorial boards of several international statistical and related journals, including International Journal of Clinical Biostatistics and Biometrics, International Journal of Statistics and Reliability Engineering STATS, Analytics, and the Journal of Statistical Theory and Practice. He has also delivered numerous research presentations at national and international conferences as a plenary, invited, and contributed speakers.

Dr. Kibria is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and received an Honorary Doctorate from Jönköping University, Sweden, on October 8, 2022. He was also recognized among the World's Top 2% Scientists for six consecutive years (2020–2025), according to the ranking database compiled by Stanford University, USA.
