Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Halkiyo is a Postdoctoral Associate at the School of Universal Computing, Construction, and Engineering Education (SUCCEED) at Florida International University. He works with Dr. Stephen Secules on the research project entitled "CAREER: Using Equity Metrics and Reflective Engagement to Transform Engineering Classrooms Towards Racial Equity." Dr. Halkiyo obtained his Ph.D. in Education Policy and Evaluation from Arizona State University and was awarded a prestigious Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship, during which he conducted his dissertation research on global education policy transfer from the global West/North to the global South/East, specifically Ethiopia, Africa. Dr. Halkiyo's primary research focuses on enhancing higher education equity for all students, especially those from international and/or underrepresented backgrounds such as women and/or Black students in engineering. He uses mixed methods, mainly qualitative inquiry, to identify and address systemic learning barriers in the curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and learning environment, ensuring that education is inclusive and responsive to all learners. Additionally, Dr. Halkiyo has over seven years of experience teaching and engaging in diverse higher education leadership at a university in Ethiopia, where he also served as a principal investigator for the "Engendering Higher Education Curricula" research project.
