Dr. Gardner is a tropical plant systematist with a strong background in tropical plant identification, particularly in the Asian tropics. His research focuses on evolutionary relationships between tropical plants; relationships between plants and pollinators; and relationships between plants and people. His work is informed by molecular phylogenetics, and he is very proficient in bioinformatics and the entire next-generation sequencing workflow. He also has experience with floral volatile chemistry. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Malaysia; worked with living collections in the USA, Malaysia, and Indonesia, and with herbaria throughout the world; and has developed interest in Neotropical flora to complete global comparative analyses
