Xavier Comas

Professor Comas is an internationally recognized expert in near-surface geophysics with emphasis in karst materials and carbon cycling studies in both subtropical and boreal peatland systems in the US and other locations worldwide such as Indonesia, Uganda, Colombia, Ecuador, the UK, and Spain. Publications include over 55 papers in peer reviewed international journals of geophysics, hydrology, and biogeosciences, 5 book chapters, 2 co-edited books in geophysics and carbon cycling, and nearly 200 published abstracts. Served as principal investigator on multiple research projects funded by the National Science Foundation, US Department of Energy, Department of Defense, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), US National Parks Service, US Geological Survey, NASA/Florida Space Grant Consortium, and Florida Sea Grant. Assumed prominent leadership roles in the academic geophysical community, including President of the Near-Surface (NS) Section of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), co-Chair of the AGU-SEG Collaboration Committee, Chair of the Program Committee for GPR2022, and Co-Chair of the Steering Committee for the development of a National Near-Surface Geophysics Center (NSF funded effort). Also assumed prominent positions in the scientific community at large, including member of the Council Leadership Team at AGU, or member of the Fall Meeting Program Committee. Served on multiple advisory boards for large interdisciplinary federal research projects including DOE, NSF, and NASA.
