The prestige of endowed chairs and professorships lies beyond scholarly works and is reflected in the transformational impact it has on our students.  At FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education, we are committed to providing instruction and mentoring from the best scholars and researchers in the world. It is these teachers and mentors who will help prepare our students to meet the challenges of a complex global environment and leverage our position as a world-class university.

Our continued success in the competitive world of higher education depends on the university’s ability to offer endowed chairs and professorships to extraordinary faculty. These types of endowed funds are critical in helping us attract and retain talent across a diverse set of disciplines and promote interdisciplinary scholarship. It is one of the most important contributions one can make to academic intellectual independence.

George M. Barley Jr. Endowed Chair in Everglades Research

The George M. Barley, Jr. Endowed Chair in Everglades Research was established in 2000 through contributions by International Paper Company and generous support from the Everglades Foundation and Mary Barley. Named in honor of the late real estate developer, environmental activist, and co-founder of the Everglades Foundation—George McKim Barley, Jr.—this endowed position supports research and post-doctoral collaboration around restoration of the Everglades. A tenacious and passionate fighter, George Barley brought business acumen and an entrepreneur's drive to the Everglades restoration movement. The George M. Barley Endowed Chair in Everglades Research, together with the ongoing partnership between FIU and the foundation he helped to establish, is a fitting legacy to a man who made so much possible on behalf of one of America's most endangered ecosystems.

The Walter and Rosalie Goldberg Professorship in Tropical Ecology

Established in 2018, The Walter and Rosalie Goldberg Professorship in Tropical Ecology was designed to expand the University’s expertise in conservation, sustainability, resilience, impacts of invasive species, and other human disruptions to tropical ecosystems. Natives of Massachusetts, Walter joined FIU’s faculty in 1973 and Rosalie spent her career in Miami working for BellSouth and later AT&T. Over the next 39 years, Walter played an active role in the evolution of the FIU Department of Biological Sciences and the Marine Sciences Program, while teaching general biology, oceanography, and zoology courses and conducting research on the biology of corals. The Walter and Rosalie Goldberg Professorship reflects the couple’s dedication to the resilience of tropical ecosystems and to the sustainability of the Department of Biological Sciences at FIU.

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Professorship in Education

The Patricia and Phillip Frost Professorship was established in 1991 by Dr. and Mrs. Philip and Patricia Frost. Since beginning their affiliation with FIU in 1982, they have been the benefactors of the Patricia and Philip Frost Art Museum, the Stella and J. Burton Orr Grand Pavilion (named in honor of Mrs. Frost’s parents), and two Frost professorships. The couples’ belief in the power of education is reflected in their years of service Mrs. Frost had a 28-year career in the Miami-Dade and Broward County public school systems while Dr. Frost has founded and chaired several medical corporations. Both have served on the FIU Board of Trustees and Board of Directors, as well as been internationally recognized for their philanthropic efforts. The prestige of this professorship lies beyond scholarly works and is reflected in the transformational impact it has on preparing and inspiring the next generation of worldly, engaged, and thoughtful researchers and scholars within the College of Arts, Sciences & Education.
