Certificate in Linguistics

The Linguistics Program offers a certificate acknowledging that a student has demonstrated competence in coursework pertaining to the study of linguistics. This certificate is designed to meet the needs of those who have a general interest in linguistics studies, as well as those for who work in linguistics would assist in career planning or advancement.

Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to earn the certificate. A student can acquire a Certificate in Linguistic Studies by successfully completing at least six courses in linguistics or linguistics-related courses, totaling eighteen credit hours. 

  • Courses

    A Coordinating Committee representing various fields will advise students and grant the Certificate. All students must complete one introductory course and one structure course from the courses listed below for a total of six credit hours.

    Introductory Courses:

    • LIN 3010 General Linguistics (3)
    • LIN 3013 General Linguistics (3)
    • LIN 5018 Introduction to Linguistics (3)

    Structure Courses:

    • LIN 4680 Modern English Grammar (3)
    • FRE 4800 Contrastive Morphology (3)
    • SPN 4802 Contrastive Syntax (3)
    • LIN 5501 English Syntax (3)

    In addition to the above, all students must complete an additional four courses totaling twelve credits. The following courses qualify:

    • Any course with an LIN prefix except LIN 3670 - Grammatical Usage
    • Linguistics courses with FOL, FRE, POR, and SPN prefixes, with permission must be received from the Program Director
    • PHI 4221 Philosophy of Language (3)
    • PHI 4222 Philosophy of Dialogue (3)
    • MHF 4302 Mathematical Logic (3) with permission from the Program Director

  • Application

    Current degree-seeking students only need to submit the Change of Program/Plan form to add a certificate. All other certificate applicants should complete the appropriate application form below and submit to the department for approval. Currently enrolled degree seeking students do not need to re-submit residency documents. Approved certificate applications will be forwarded to the Registrar for processing.
