Rehabilitation & Recreational Therapy Fieldwork/ Internships

The Rehabilitation & Recreational Therapy (RRT) program at FIU consists of two different types
of fieldwork placements: LEI 4940 (Fieldwork in RRT) and LEI 4941 (RT Internship).

Rehab Track Students:
• LEI 4940 & LEI 4941 are NOT required
• LEI 4940 can be taken as an elective (3 or 6 credits)

Recreational Therapy Track Students:
• LEI 4940 – 6 credits – REQUIRED
• LEI 4941 – 12 credits – REQUIRED

  • Fieldwork in RRT (LEI 4940 - 6 credits)

Fieldwork provides students with the opportunity to gain introductory hands-on
experience at an approved healthcare agency. Students have a couple of options of how
to complete their fieldwork placement(s). RT Track students are required to complete 6
credits of LEI 4940 (=320 contact hours) and Rehab Track students are not required to
complete fieldwork, but can elect to complete either 3 credits (160 contact hours) or 6
credits (320 contact hours) of fieldwork.

  • Recreational Therapy (RT) internship (LEI 4941 - 12 credits)

The RT Internship is completed only by students enrolled in the RT Track during their
final semester of the degree program. This internship follows the National Council for
Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) guidelines. Students must be accepted to
an approved internship agency under the supervision of a full-time Certified Therapeutic
Recreation Specialist (CTRS) who has been working at the agency for a minimum of one
    year.

Fieldwork & Internship Sites

All fieldwork and internship locations must be approved by the RRT internship coordinator
before the experience begins. The internship coordinator offers several ‘Orientation Meetings’
every semester to review the steps to obtain a placement and all the requirements that must
be met by the student.

FIU has a list of sites that have accepted RRT students in the past. FIU requires an affiliation
agreement with every agency that accepts a student for a fieldwork or internship placement.
The affiliation agreement is a legal contract that has to be approved by both the agency and
FIU’s legal counsel. It is important to note that students are responsible for finding and securing
their own placement and are not guaranteed to complete rotations in their preferred location,
city or setting.
