Environmental projects include examining biogeochemistry of environmentally and biomedically important trace elements, such as mercury and arsenic; hydrocarbon speciation in ancient sediments studied by SFC extraction; studies of molecules and airborne particulates of importance to the atmosphere; photocatalytic decomposition of organophosphates; and utilizing spin trapping agents to probe for the presence of free radicals in specimens subjected to adverse conditions.
Biomedical research includes synthesis of biologically important molecules in order to probe enzyme mechanisms, theoretical studies of active sites of protease enzymes and dietary influence on the makeup of the macular pigment.
This track falls under the larger category of discipline-based education research, giving students a deep understanding of the scientific discipline as well as the underpinnings of educational research methods to investigate and improve pedagogy.
This track leverages the research preeminence of the Institute of Environment and its programs in aquatic chemistry, long-term environmental monitoring, sea level rise and more. Through focused coursework and research, therefore, students develop a strong expertise in both environmental science and chemistry and are prepared for employment in industry, government and academia.
This track's research-based graduate curriculum prepares future researchers in the chemical sciences with a particular emphasis in forensics through the university's International Forensic Research Institute. Research in this area involves collaborations with local, state, national and international agencies, with projects ranging from the detection and analysis of ultra-trace amounts of materials found at crime scenes, to DNA typing in mass disasters, to canine screening for explosives.
This track prepares students with an interest in the broader chemical aspects of nuclear and radiological sciences. Students develop a strong expertise in both applied radiological sciences and chemistry and will be able to find employment in these areas in industry, government and academia.
