BA in Chemical Education

Our Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry with a Chemical Education major combines the rigorous requirements of the Chemistry BA program with content-specific pedagogy to prepare students for teaching chemistry at the secondary level. The major offers a degree in the discipline with multiple field experiences in diverse classroom settings and culminates in a full-time teaching internship.

Upon graduation from the program, students are endorsed for Full Teacher Certification by the Florida Department of Education, which allows them to teach 6th to 12th grade throughout the state. Students may conduct research with the department's faculty members, many of whom are interdisciplinary in their training and interests and teach in several fields. Some students present the results of their research at national conferences and publish them in chemistry journals.

Students may visit FIUteach for opportunities to try out teaching at no cost.

Admissions
- Freshman Applicant criteria - for students entering FIU as a freshman or transfer student with fewer than 60 credits
- Transfer Applicant criteria - for transfer students entering FIU with 60 or more transfer credits
To qualify for admission, undergraduates must have completed 60 credit hours of lower-division courses and all general education requirements with a lower-division GPA of 2.5 or higher. Candidates also must have achieved the competencies of the FTCE General Knowledge Exam. All students must pass the GK Exam by the time they reach 72 credit hours in their program of study.
A student who meets these minimum requirements is not automatically assured admission. Program admission requirements are subject to change. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure they have met the requirements.
