An after school enrichment program using hands-on activities to get students excited about the process of discovery through engaging STEAM experiences.

Overview

Camp Inspire showcases real world science in action through activities geared towards students in grades 3rd - 5th and 6th - 8th and based on FIU research. We bring informal science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) enrichment to students. The hands-on nature of these activities helps to reinforce concepts they will see in the classroom.

93% were excited to talk about what they learned with others
66% felt confident in explaining what they learned to their parents
90% were interested in participating in the program again

Current Partners

We've worked with the City of Miami Beach to bring Camp Inspire to students at Fienberg Fisher K-8 and Biscayne Beach Elementary since 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What topics are covered?

Topics range from microplastics and marine ecology to using forensic and DNA science to advocate for environmental conservation. The interactive programs and Mission Inspire curriculum engage students in conversations about careers in STEM, their connection to the natural world and practical science concepts needed for a sustainable future.

  • What is the impact/benefit?

This project brings informal science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) enrichment to students who otherwise would not have access to such opportunities after school. Additionally, many of the lessons were designed to help students think critically about environmental issues in our community, especially related to Biscayne Bay and ocean health.

  • What if English is not the first language of students?

For the majority of the students we currently work with, English is not their first language. By having bilingual university student facilitators, the elementary students are provided with a unique near-peer dual language learning environment. This increases the comfort level of the younger students and encourages enhanced engagement while providing them with role models.

As indicated in the survey results, many students were sharing information from the sessions with their parents providing an additional link for community education. Due the Spanish speaking demographic of participating students, this may provide an opportunity to bridge the language gaps in community-based science and environmental education.
