Research Areas

Dr. Zhu's research mainly focuses on advancing our understanding of (a) hurricane dynamics and intensification and (b) cloud life-cycle and cloud-climate feedback that modulates climate change. Using innovative numerical and observational methods, he characterizes turbulent eddy structure and quantifies turbulent transport in the hurricane boundary layer critical to the storm evolution. His research addresses key issues on the representation of model physics in numerical models and the improvement of forecasting skills by the operational models used for predicting hurricanes. The cloud research conducted by Dr. Zhu covers a range of topics with a focus on the improvement of cloud parameterization in global climate models and reduced uncertainty of cloud-climate feedback in climate change projection.
